Abstract/Contents:"A field study was initiated in 1991 to determine environmental conditions favorable for Rhizoctonia blight (R. solani Kuhn) in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), and to develop a model to predict disease severity. Environmental conditions monitored were ambient air temperature, relative humidity (RH), precipitation, leaf wetness duration, soil temperature, soil moisture, and soil irradiance. A visual estimate of percent plot area covered with R. solani mycelium was used to determine moderate, high, and very high disease severity levels. A very high disease severity index required > or = 9 hours of RH > or = 95% with a minimum and average air temperature of > or = 22 and > or = 24C, respectively, with > or = 6 hours of RH > or = 95% or > or = 6 hours of RH > or = 90% plus precipitation > or = 8 mm. A moderate disease severity index was associated with minimum and average air temperature of > or = 17 and > or = 19C; respectively, with > or = 3 hours of RH > or = 95% or > or = 3 hours of RH > or = 90% plus precipitation > or = 8 mm. Disease severity was predicted with > or = 83% accuracy. In 1993, the model was field evaluated and a 30% reduction in fungicide use was achieved when compared to applying a fungicide on a 14-day schedule."
