| Abstract/Contents: | The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Bandane [polychlorodicyclopentadiene isomers], bensulide, chlorthal-dimethyl, siduron and terbucarb at standard, double and triple rates on a mixed stand of Kentucky bluegrass [Poa pratensis], red fescue [Festuca rubra] and colonial bentgrass [Agrostis tenuis] under two levels of fertility. The herbicides were applied annually in the spring from 1967 to '73. A 10-6-4 fertilizer was applied each year at a rate between 1 and 3 lb/acre of N in mid-spring to half the plots and in late spring or summer to all plots. Higher fertility resulted in an increase in bluegrass and bentgrass, a decrease in fescue and general improved grass stand and appearance, and in a greater stand reduction where high rates of Bandane, bensulide and terbucarb were used. Turfgrass stands were not greatly affected after 7 years' use of herbicides at standard rates. There was, however, a decrease in bentgrass and fescue and an increase in bluegrass in plots treated with Bandane. At double and triple rates there were reductions in stand from Bandane, bensulide and terbucarb it was all 3 species at high fertility and bentgrass at lower fertility. At the triple rate there was some change in population with chlorthal-dimethyl and siduron. There was less bentgrass with siduron and less fescue with chlorthal-dimethyl. |
