Abstract/Contents:Glyphosate has shown potential for turf renovation as a non-selective herbicide prior to oversowing desirable species. The waiting period required before sowing is investigated in this report. Applications were made to a Kentucky bluegrass [Poa pratensis] + Agrostis sp. + Zoysia sp. turf on 13 August 1973. Rates were 1.5 and 3 lb/acre. Plots were oversown with Manhattan ryegrass, 1, 3, 6 and 10 days after treatment. Immediately after sowing siduron was applied at 4.5 lb/acre. Sowing was either by vertical cutting to place the seed in dead grass, or by vertical slitting to place the seed in soil. On 2 October 1973 at the 1.5 lb/acre rate of glyphosate, plots oversown with Manhattan ryegrass by vertical cutting for seed placement had an average germination of 75% with no difference between sowing time intervals. Oversowing by placement of seed in soil in slits also had 75% germination with no difference between sowing dates. Plots treated with 3 lb/acre and oversown by vertical cutting to place the seed had 90% germination when sown 10 days after treatment. Sowing at 1, 3 and 6 days after treatment resulted in 20, 20 and 40% germination. The results show the best germination and survival of ryegrass with the 1.5 lb/acre rate, with no difference between sowing time intervals and between sowing methods. At 3 lb/acre best germination and survival was with the 10-day interval after treatments with no difference between sowing methods. Control of existing Kentucky bluegrass and Agrostis sp. was good at 1.5 lb/acre. Zoysia sp. was not satisfactorily controlled. At 3 lb/acre all existing vegetation appeared to be controlled.
