Abstract/Contents: | Discusses where the golf industry is heading in Florida. There has been dramatic growth in the number of courses in Florida in the last decade. It is no secret that a lot of this is due to the large senior population in the state. For the immediate and forseeable future, the best interests of the game lie in the senior ranks. Older golfers will influence the game in many ways. Older golfers often like shorter courses. This may help the "modified short ball concept" become established. Older golfers mean more sophisticated equipment (lighter clubs, smaller golf bags, possibly livelier balls). There will probably be an increase in powered golf cart use in the state. Thanks to higher demand, we can expect to see more municipal courses. At present, twentey or more Florida cities or counties have plans for new courses. There is a growing interst in contract maintenance in Florida. Private operators are offering a number of services and operators of all types of courses are becoming more interested. Golf operators are searching out ways to curb rising costs such as: use of computers and electronic equipment; use of effluent water, ets. There is neither a boom nor bust on the immediate horizon for Florida golf. Shorter, more imaginative courses will gladden the hearts of most of us in golf, including the golf course superintendents. |
