| Abstract/Contents: | Twelve cvs representing 8 grass species were each grown in a sand/vermiculite medium in the greenhouse, supplied with 6 nutrient solutions varying in chloride content for 140 days, and cut at lawn height. Six harvests of grass cuttings were obtained and analysed for chloride uptake. Visual ratings and yields indicated that the grasses tolerated relatively high chloride levels for a considerable time. Chloride uptake increased with time and with increasing chloride content of the solutions. Uptake was less from alkaline than from acid solutions. Highland bentgrass (Agrostis tenuis), Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) and timothy (Phleum pratense) were the least tolerant, whereas Norlea perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and Kentucky 31 tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) were the most tolerant to chlorides. Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) and creeping red fescue (Festuca rubra) were intermediate in their tolerance. |
