| Abstract/Contents: | In a discussion of the problem, reference is made to experiments reported in WA 25, 2920. The screening of existing herbicides might lead to the discovery of compounds to control weed species in Festuca rubra and Lolium perenne, but the outlook for turf containing Agrostis tenuis or seedlings of Poa pratensis is not good. Another possible solution might be the production of lines of amenity grasses with increased tolerance of existing grass-killing herbicides. However, results of a programme to select F. rubra genotypes tolerant of paraquat and glyphosate were unsuccessful. It is suggested that success in selection may well depend on the ability to standardize the effect of environment on phenotypic characters which contribute to herbicide tolerance. |
