Abstract/Contents:"Pinoxaden is an ACCase inhibiting herbicide newly released for use in turf. Currently, it is labelled for St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) sod production. Research was conducted to evaluate the response of four different St. Augustinegrass cultivars to pinoxaden and also to explore potential tank mixture partners that may reduce pinoxaden injury to St. Augustinegrass without reducing weed control efficacy. Tank mixtures evaluated were pinoxaden (1.56 kg ai ha-1) tank mixed with either metsulfuron (0.32 kg ai ha-1), halosulfuron (0.52 kg ai ha-1), propiconazole (0.50 kg ai ha-1) or chlorothalonil (7.35 kg ai ha-1). Differences in cultivar response was observed. 'Raleigh' and 'Floratam' cultivars were more tolerant to pinoxaden than 'Classic' and 'Palmetto'. In 2018, chlorothalonil, metsulfuron and halosulfuron reduced pinoxaden injury on St. Augustinegrass. All four tank mixtures reduced pinoxaden injury in 2019. Greenhouse studies were conducted to confirm potential antagonism of pinoxaden by metsulfuron, halosulfuron and chlorothalonil. Three rates of pinoxaden (0.78, 1.56, and 3.12 kg ai ha-1) were applied alone and in tank mixture with each chemical. St. Augustinegrass above ground biomass was collected 28 days after treatment. All tank mixtures evaluated increased total St. Augustinegrass biomass compared to pinoxaden treatments by themselves. Further research is needed to determine how each tank mixture affects weed control efficacy."
