Abstract/Contents:"As the amount of impervious surfaces in urban environments increases, the ability of highly utilized modified rootzones to infiltrate water is becoming more important. Current methods of water infiltration range from simple infiltrometers to more complicated instruments like magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography. While the latter methods can provide high resolution reconstruction of soil structure, there is a tradeoff between core size and image quality. We propose an improved method for visualizing water movement through modified rootzones that will give precise infiltration rates through undisturbed soil cores without highly technical equipment. In this study soil cores 30 cm in length were taken from golf course putting greens and fluorescent dye was used in conjunction with UV light and time lapse photography to track movement of the wetting front. Images were processed with Matlab and an algorithm was developed to quantify infiltration rates in units of mm sec-1. With this information we hope to distinguish and characterize water infiltration through different soil layers within a modified rootzone."
