Abstract/Contents:"A case can be made that James B Beard is the "Father" of modern turfgrass science. During his career spanning mid 1960's to 2018, he set a standard of excellence in turfgrass research that raised the bar for quality turfgrass science. Throughout his career, Beard pursued publication of books that systematically and carefully-outlined his views of an evolving discipline, framing a foundation for turfgrass science as he saw it. He was very thorough and precise in his research, teaching and writing endeavors. Beard developed and trained over 45 domestic and international graduate students, many of whom became leaders in ASA, CSSA, and turfgrass science. These individuals continued to raise the quality of turfgrass science in the USA and internationally. His leadership example resulted in the development of others who continued to grow and strengthen C-5 as a strong and valued division of CSSA. He perceived the need for C-5 to have representation on the Crop Science Editorial Board and his ground work led to the creation of a C-5 Technical Editor position in 2002. It was Beard who provided the vision and much of the leadership for the development of the International Turfgrass Society and the subsequent publication of the ITS Research Journal. He understood the need for funding to conduct quality research, and it was his pioneering leadership along with others that resulted in the USGA Turfgrass Environmental and Research Program funding that supports quality, peer-evaluated, independent turfgrass research. Beard had a unique appreciation for history and the contributions to turfgrass science by those who went before us. He leaves behind a legacy in science that deserves recognition and respect. Dr. James B. Beard is truly the "Father of Modern Turfgrass Science".
