Abstract/Contents:"Urban soils after construction activities represent degraded soils, lacking in organic matter and biological activity under compacted conditions, which often result in vegetation failure. This study investigates urban soil remediation methods consisting of compost and tillage treatment to restore urban soils for vegetation establishment and the biological health of the soils. A field testing site (~ 0.12 acre) was established at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Edinburg campus following completion of on-site construction activities. The site received four different treatments in four replicated trials on a randomized complete block design: 1) tillage only, 2) compost only, 3) tillage + compost, and 4) control (no tillage + no compost). Each plot was sized in 3.5-m width and 4-m length. Tillage was done by a rear-tine tiller (up to 15 cm in tillage depth). Compost was obtained from a municipal composting facility and it was applied in 5-cm depth and incorporated. After the tillage and/or compost treatments, a total of 16 plots were hydroseeded with common Bermuda grass in June, 2018. Monitoring of turfgrass health (root depth and chlorophyll content) and soil biological indicators (soil respiration, soil enzyme activity, particulate organic matter and earthworm) is in progress. The outcome of this study will have broad impact in urban compacted soil in terms of restoring soil biological health under semi-arid region like Lower Rio Grande valley, South Texas."
