| Abstract/Contents: | "Annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) is one of the most troublesome weeds in managed turfgrass systems, causing severe economic losses to the turfgrass industry. Researchers from 13 states (AL, FL, IN, GA, MS, NJ, NC, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, and VA) are collaborating to determine the extent of herbicide resistance among escaped annual bluegrass plants. In the early spring and summer of 2019, over 1000 unique annual bluegrass populations were collected from participating states across five USDA plant hardiness zones, with a targeted goal of 2000 total populations by the end of 2020. Each population is comprised of 20-25 individual plants that escaped standard herbicide treatments from one of four primary turfgrass systems: golf courses, athletic fields, sod production farms, and home lawns. Populations were subsequently propagated into flats (20 tillers per flat) in the greenhouse to conduct a preliminary screening with pre- and post-emergence herbicides to identify putative resistant biotypes for further evaluation. Plant response to 12 treatments (11 herbicides and 1 non-treated check) is being evaluated to establish the extent of resistance in sampled populations: trifloxysulfuron, pronamide, simazine, glyphosate, ethofumesate, paclobutrazol, mesotrione, diquat, glufosinate, prodiamine and indaziflam. The objective of this presentation is to introduce the scope of the USDA-SCRI project and present select preliminary findings from the field surveys and resistance screenings. This research is on-going and scheduled to continue through 2020." |
