Abstract/Contents:Discusses turfgrass responses to different nitrogen sources. In comparisons between four water-soluble sources of nitrogen--ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate, urea, and calcium nitrate--ammonium sulfate has been the most consistently superior source, winter and summer. IBDU was consistently superior for winter usage of the controlled-release nitrogen. In summer, Milorganite, sulfur-coated urea and Osmocote were generally superior to the ureaforms. Sulfur-coated ureas or Osmocote should not be used on turf cut at less than about one inch, due to displacement or fracturing of fertilizer pellets. "It is concluded that the value of controlled-release nitrogen can be better justified when used as the dominant form of N in a mixture rather than at one-half or less of the total. The quantity of soluble nitrogen should be kept to that necessary to produce the immediate response desired, such as for spring usage or rejuvenation of severely starved turf, unless bulking and reduction of toxicity potential are important."
