Abstract/Contents:"Planting cover crops to reduce the fallow period in semiarid cropping systems provide agronomic and environmental benefits. Information is limited on the effect of cover crops on soil water content and subsequent crop yield in semiarid climate of southern Great Plains. A study was conducted in 2018 and 2019 growing seasons to determine the effects of cover crops on forage corn and sorghum yields, and soil water content. The study was set up as a randomized complete block design with three cover crop mixtures of grasses, legumes, and brassicas (mix 1: berseem clover + Austrian winter pea + annual ryegrass + winter triticale + turnip + diakon radish; mix 2: annual ryegrass + winter triticale + turnip + diakon radish; mix 3: berseem clover + Australian winter pea + annual ryegrass + winter triticale) and no cover crop (fallow) control, each treatment replicated four times. Both phases of rotations were present each year. The preliminary results showed that mix 2 of grasses and legumes yielded more biomass than mix 1 and mix 3. Mixture of grasses, legumes and brassicas showed full ground cover but more water uptake compared to fallow and mixtures without brassicas. In addition, brassicas tended to decrease the percentage of yield contribution by legume in the mixture which greatly reduced legume biomass. Mixture of grasses and legumes provide good ground cover and conserve soil moisture. The effect on subsequent crops yield and nutritive value of both cover crops and cash crops will also be discussed."
