Abstract/Contents:"Modelling encompasses a range of approaches, ranging from simple, conceptual models, to multi-input mechanistic models. Models vary in time scale and most commonly range in scale from days to years; dynamical models have a differential equation basis and can include time as infinitely variable. Most models integrate across broad spatial scales, however, biological processes are typically spatially explicit and our current models are generally poor at quantifying spatial processes. Modelling is now included as an increasingly important component of today's research and as we progress into the digital age, 'big data' will allow development and use of increasingly complex biological models. This paper summarizes the application on modelling to the grassland ecosystem, and identifies how modelling might be used into the future."
