Abstract/Contents: | "Zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) is a desirable, low-input turfgrass species for golf course turf. However, prolific zoysiagrass seedhead production in the spring increases golf course maintenance costs and reduces aesthetics. Previous research identified that a fall ethephon application could suppress zoysiagrass seedhead production the following spring but the optimum application timing was not well-defined. The objectives of this experiment were to determine the optimum window for effective ethephon applications for 'Meyer' zoysiagrass seedhead suppression. Field research was conducted in Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, and Tennessee. Seedheads were controlled 0-99% depending on application timing. Ethephon application timings in Indiana and Kansas generally performed similarly. Likewise, ethephon application timings generally performed similarly in Arkansas and Tennessee. In Indiana, applications between 30 Aug and 2 Oct provided >82% seedhead control. In Kansas, applications between 30 Aug and 18 Sept yielded >65% seedhead control. Optimum applications timings corresponded with day length of 11.7 to 13.1 h and 12.3 to 13.1 h in Indiana and Kansas, respectively. Seedhead control for applications beyond 9 Oct resulted in <21% seedhead control in both Indiana and Kansas. In Tennessee, applications between 19 Sep and 23 Oct provided >78% seedhead control. In Arkansas, applications between 3 Oct and 17 Oct yielded >52% seedhead control. Optimum applications timings corresponded with day length of 11.0 to 12.2 h and 11.2 to 11.7 h in Tennessee and Arkansas, respectively. Seedhead control for applications beyond 23 Oct resulted in reduced seedhead control in both Tennessee and Arkansas. As anticipated, optimum application timing was approximately 2 weeks later in Arkansas and Tennessee compared to Indiana and Kansas. Application timing for seedhead suppression in this experiment is consistent with a previous report. This research defines the optimum fall application window for spring zoysiagrass seedhead suppression across a broad geographic range." |
