Abstract/Contents: | "An experiment was conducted in 1994 to evaluate the efficacy of reduced rates of PRE herbicides for control of southern crabgrass. Treatments included 140, 560, 840, 1120, 1680, or 3360 g ai ha pendimethalin (60 DG) or oryzalin (4 AS); 140, 280, 420, 560, 700, or 840 g ai/ha prodiamine (65 WDG); and 140, 210, 280, 350, 420, or 560 g ai/ha dithiopyr (1L). All treatments were applied in mid-March using a ² powered backpack sprayer in a volume of 230 l/ha. Southern crabgrass control evaluations were made bi-weekly through June and monthly thereafter. Data were subjected to analysis of variance, and regression analysis was used for describing southern crabgrass control during the experiment. Prodiamine at 140 g/ha provided 80% crabgrass control through 71 days after treatment (DAT), while all rates provided < 80% control from 123 through 185 DAT. Pendimethalin at 560 g/ha controlled southern crabgrass 80% after 85 d. All rates of dithiopyr controlled southern crabgrass 80% control through 56 DAT; however, 140 g/ha provided < 80% control from 85 through 185 DAT. Oryzalin at 560 g/ha provided 80% control through 56 DAT while control declined below 80% with all rates except 3360 g/ha from 85 to 185 DAT. Quadratic functions best described crabgrass control when regressed against time. Estimated length of control 80% with prodiamine was 75 to 100 d with 420 g/ha, 60 d with 140 g/ha, and 35 d with 140 g/ha. Estimated lengh of control with pendimethalin was 135, 80 or 70 d with 3360, 1680, or 1120 g/ha, respectively. Rates 840 g/ha provided 80% control from 35 to 45 d. Dithiopyr controlled southern crabgrass 80% through 110, 100 or 70 to 85 d with 560, 420, or 350 g/ha, respectively. Estimated crabgrass control with oryzalin was similar to that observed with pendimethalin." |
