Abstract/Contents:"Glyphosate is an excellent chemical tool for turfgrass renovation because it has a wide spectrum of herbicidal activity, is translocated in perennial species, and does not have residual soil activity. Nevertheless, occasional weeds such as dandelion may escape control with glyphosate. Excised leaves of field grown dandelion and curly dock were used in studies to determine the limits of their susceptibility to glyphosate and to evaluate possible treatments for increasing glyphosate efficacy. Placing the base of excised leaves in a glyphosate spray solution resulted in rapid injury to the leaves, indicating that foliar absorption of glyphosate was limiting efficacy. The addition of ammonium salts did not provide an expected increase in glyphosate phytotoxicity. Glyphosate rapidly inhibited transpiration after application, however, portions of the treated leaves submerged in water were protected from the desiccating effects of glyphosate."
