Abstract/Contents:"Golf greens in the five Nordic countries Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland are commonly sprayed preventatively with fungicides in autumn for control of Microdochium nivale and other winter-active pathogens. The number of fungicides approved for this purpose is, however, limited to two to five active ingredients in each country. Moreover, the principles for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) require cultural measures or alternative products to be prioritized before fungicides applications whenever possible1. One alternative product, previously not tested in the Nordic countries, is Civitas OneTM, a mixture of food grade isoparaffins (CivitasTM) and a blue-green, pigment (HarmonizerTM; all produced by Suncor Energy, Mississauga, Canada). Research in North America has shown CivitasTM + HarmonizerTM to be effective against M.nivale2,3,4, but it is also a common experience that it is necessary to combine CivitasTM with low rates of fungicides to obtain adequate control in areas with prolonged snow cover4. Our objective was to evaluate the potential of Civitas OneTM, applied either alone or in combination with traditional fungicides or potassium phosphite, to replace the current use of fungicides against M. nivale on Nordic golf courses. Trials were conducted both in the southern/coastal climatic zone and in the northern/continental climatic zone representing the contrasting durations of snow cover within the Nordic countries."
