Abstract/Contents:"A listing of the '100' best in the U.S. reveals some significant information." According to Golf Digest the top golf courses are judged on the criterion of shot values, resistance to scoring, design balance, memorability, aesthetics and conditioning. Early courses were molded to the land. New courses are made with every technological advantage, facilitating computers, cranes, helicopters, and even rolls of thick sod instead of growing grass. "Do modern methods produce better courses?" According to Golf Digest, out of the top 20 golf courses, 17 were made before 1935. "Why are the older courses considered the best?" One of the many reasons is the natural setting. Another is the golfer chooses the shot versus the new courses' architecture, and finally many of the new courses are too demanding for the weekend golfer.
