Abstract/Contents:"The term compost has been applied to a broad range of materials that have sufficiently rotted to change color and structure, even though the product may lack the desired chemical and biological properties of a mature compost." This makes the development of standards and criteria relating to compost quality a necessity. A number a state agencies, consumer groups and producer associations are creating proposals for this purpose. Maturity is the primary determinant of the quality of a compost. It can be measured a number of different ways. Quality can also be measured by observation of the chemical and physical properties of a compost. The length of the curing process has an effect on these properties.
