Abstract/Contents:"Green kyllinga (Kyllinga brevifolia) is widely distributed across the southeastern states. It is a highly invasive weed in improved turfgrass. Because of its narrow, dark green leaves, this weed is not often noticed until seedheads appear. Two studies were conducted to evaluate various herbicides for postemergence control of green kyllinga in bermudagrass. One study evaluated single and split applications of fluazasulfron and halosulfuron. The second application of the split treatments was made 4 weeks after the first application. A single application of imazaquin was used as a standard check. The second study evaluated single applications of imazaquin, MSMA, fluazasulfron, halosulfuron, bentazon, and triclopyr+clorpyralid. In the first study, only fluazasulfuron at 0.089 lb ai/A provided commercially acceptable control (79%) of green kyllinga at 2 weeks after treatment (WAT). By 4 WAT, the 0.044 lb ai/A rate was also providing control. At 6 WAT, plots treated with fluazasulfuron at 0.044 or 0.089 lb ai/A were free of green kyllinga. Split applications of fluazasulfron provided control at 2 WAT (second application) at the 0.022 + 0.022 lb ai/A rate. Halosulfuron controlled green kyllinga only with 0.0062 + 0.062 lb ai/A applications beginning at 6 WAT (4 weeks after initial treatment and 2 weeks after second application). Control of green kyllinga with imazaquin was not evident until 8 WAT. Imazaquin was the only herbicide to injure the bermudagrass. The second study was initiated to gain further comparisons of green kyllinga control with other turfgrass herbicides that are used for sedge control. Fluazasulfuron at all rates provided excellent control at 4 WAT and later. Plots treated with halosulfuron exhibited excellent green kyllinga control by 4 WAT. However, by 6 WAT, kyllinga was controlled in plots treated at the 0.0096 lb ai/A rate of halosulfuron. Both rates of imazaquin controlled green kyllinga by 4 WAT. Triclopyr+clopyralid did not provide any control of green kyllinga. Plots treated with MSMA exhibited good green kyllinga control at 2 WAT, but with the exception of MSMA at 4.0 lb ai/A, kyllinga had regrown by 4 WAT. Bentazon did not provide an acceptable level of control at any rating date. MSMA caused short-term browning of the turfgrass. Moderate to severe injury to the bermudagrass by triclopyr+clopyralid lasted about 6 WAT. Levels of green kyllinga control by fluazasulfuron were similar in both studies. Also in the first study, fluazasulfuron provided excellent control of white clover and suppression of large crabgrass. In plots treated with halosulfuron and imazaquin in the second study kyllinga exhibited a faster rate of death due to warmer weather conditions at the time of treatment. If browning of the bermudagrass can be tolerated, a sequential application of MSMA might provide an acceptable level of control of this weed."
