| Abstract/Contents: | Charles Finn, Finn Equipment Company, of Cincinnati, OH discusses how CWO Benjamin T. Parker of Eglin Air Force Base in Florida handled a problem on the base concerning sand dune stabilization and turf establishment. At the Eglin Air Force Base, all of the vegetation was removed when missle tracking systems and launching pads were installed, hence causing a problem with the shifting of the sand. The wind caused sand dunes up to eight feet high overnight which created maintenance problems on the base. There was also a problem with turf establishment on this air force base. Mr. Parker used a hay mulch treated with asphalt to try to get the turf established, but it did not work. However, the hay mulch did stabilize the sand dunes. Therefore, the hay mulch was used for sand dune stabilization and sewage sludge was used as a fertilizer to establish the turf. Further efforts of using sewage sludge as a fertilizer for vegetative extablishment is discussed. |
