Abstract/Contents:"The purpose of this presentation is to provide a brief overview of an on-going precision irrigation study and describe the method used to create thresholds for the studys precision irrigation-based treatments. The study is being conducted at one golf course in MN and was set up by first doing multiple surveys with the Toro Precision Sense 6000 (PS6000) to map soil moisture (% volumetric water content; VWC) and place nine fairways into similar groups of three (where each group is a replication). For the three fairways receiving precision irrigation-based treatments, irrigation management zones were delineated around georeferenced irrigation heads within fairways, and then classified into one of three soil moisture classes (low, moderate, or high) using the average VWC of each zone. One Toro TurfGuard in-ground soil moisture sensor (SMS) was installed within each soil moisture class in the fairways. A dry down was conducted on these three fairways 27 May through 2 June 2020 to identify maximum and minimum VWC limits for each in-ground SMS. In addition to VWC data from in-ground SMS, the PS6000 measured VWC and normalized difference vegetation index (i.e. turfgrass quality) periodically during the dry down. The dry down began following a 3-day period with a cumulative total of approximately 3.8 cm rainfall. Toro SiteVision was used to monitor VWC for each in-ground SMS on each fairway and record the maximum limit after the rainfall and the minimum limit once the golf course superintendent began to feel uncomfortable with visual turfgrass quality. Irrigation for the precision irrigation-based treatments is being allowed within a soil moisture class once VWC has reached the minimal limit for a given sensor. Total depth of irrigation applied to all nine fairways in the study is being recorded and water consumption results to-date between treatments will be presented."
