| Abstract/Contents: | Water is a principal constituent of living things and makes up more than half of the dry weight of actively metabolizing plant tissue. It serves as a solvent for dissolved substances, and as a medium for diffusion or mass flow of materials from one part of the plant to another. The stomata holds the water in by closing so that the water will not run straight through. Although when there is a drought and the stomata is closed no CO2 can get in; therefore, photosynthesis does not take place, makes the plant wilt. One way to prepare the turf for drought is to, in spring, hold off water which will put it into a mild stress, which will produce plants more likely to survive limited water supply later in the season. |
