Abstract/Contents:Kentucky bluegrass is one of the most common turfgrass species for golf course fairway in the cool climate. However, frequent irrigation is needed to maintain its aesthetical and playable function. Plant growth-promoting microorganisms (PGPMs) have shown the capability to improve yield and stress tolerance in field crops. The objective of this research is to determine the efficacy of six commercial PGPMs on the drought tolerance of Kentucky bluegrass. Kenblue and Waterworks Kentucky bluegrass were seeded in a greenhouse. Two-week seedlings were exposed to drought and non-drought conditions from Week 3 6. PGPM products (BontaniGard 22WP, Companion, Molt-X, Nortica 10WP, RootShield PLUS+WP, and Serenade) were applied at seeding and once weekly from Week 3 6, except Nortica 10WP (seeding and Week 4). A non-PGPM application treatment was included as the control. Drought stress inhibited plant growth. Kenblue performed better than Waterworks in plan height, shoot and root dry weight (SDW, RDW), root to shoot dry weight ratio (RSR). However, Waterworks had a higher specific root length (SRL) than Kenblue. BotanicGard22 WP, Companion, Molt-X, and Nortica 10WP' treated plants had one or more growth indices higher than the control treatment. The results showed that some commercial PGPMs have the potential to improve Kentucky bluegrass performance.
