Abstract/Contents:Discusses the processes and considerations involved in breeding new warm-season grasses. As in other kinds of product development, turfgrass breeding involves one or more cycles of design and testing. Design concepts that are established out of experiments on better grasses include: 1) What kind of hybrids to make for future cycles? 2) What plant materials to save for future testing? 3) What modifications need to made in the specifications for new varieties to make the goals more realistic? The turfgrass breeding program in Florida is directed not only to developing more beautiful grasses, but also to developing grasses with built-in protection, such as insect resistance. Four areas of work are required in developing new grasses for Florida: germplasm rsources; germplasm diversification; evaluation; and cultivar release. Each of these is a major program in itself. The plant breeder has neither a magic touch nor an extra-sensory perception of the perfect grass. Instead, the plant breeder is responsible for a common-sense shepherding of plant materials along from one step in the development process to the next.
