Abstract/Contents:Discusses information to date on bermudagrass decline. After a variety of studies over the years, the cause of bermudagrass decline has finally been identified as the fungus Phialophora radicola. The fungus formerly believed to cause the decline was thought to belong to either the genus Gaeumannomyces or Leptosphaeria. A related fungus, Phialophora graminicola is believed to cause summer patch on bluegrass in the United States. Inoculation experiments indicate that under normal conditions the fungus is not an aggressive pathogen on healthy bermudagrass. Findings confirm our field observations that grass is more severely affected under conditions that stress the plant. Chemical control is still not available but certain cultural practices will reduce the damaging effects of the disease. Cultural control practices are recommended.
