| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses what thatch is, the problems it creates, the best times to dethatch and equipment used. Thatch consists primarily of roots and stems. Grass clippings do not contribute to thatch problems unless the grass is allowed to grow tall creating a hay field affect. Problems with excessive thatch include increased drought susceptibility and increased disease and insect problems. The best time to dethatch is in the fall. If there is more than 1.5 inches of thatch it will be necessary to dethatch spring and fall. Equipment used consists of a Ryan Ren-O-Thin for small areas. For industrial areas, aerification in two directions is implemented. |
