Abstract/Contents:Discusses factors that contribute to putting green speeds. One of the major factors is mowing height. In the overall grooming/management program however, cutting height ranks third behind light, frequent vertical mowing and light topdressings. These factors and others should be combined in a program to produce better quality and faster greens without shaving the greens down to the bare minimum. Tifgreen bermudagrass should be maintained in a range of 10/64" to 7/32". Tifdwarf, on the other hand, should ideally be maintained in a range from 1/8" to 3/16". Due to shorter internode length, Tifdwarf should be maintained at a lower height of cut than Tifgreen on a comparative management schedule. Tifdwarf mowed at the same height as Tifgreen would produce thatchier conditions. Root depth and turf vigor are directly related to the cutting height. Extending beyond the limits of the turf will severely restrict rooting vigor. It is important to first establish a proper management program before establishing a set cutting height for greens. All programs and practices should be carried out with the central theme of "Am I promoting an upright growth habit of the grass?" Initiate overall programs that promote greater surface uniformity and putting speed without continued reductions in cutting height.
