Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the importance of photosynthesis and respiration to turfgrass. One of the products of the photosynthesis process is the production of carbohydrates. These carbohydrates are broken down and used by the plant in growth and development. Chlorophyll is the key plant pigment used for photosynthesis. Anything that reduces chlorophyll (loss of leaf area due to excessive mowing, stress or disease activity, nutrient deficiences or chilling injury on warm-season grasses) will decrease photosynthesis. The carbohydrates produced form through a process called respiration. If carbohydrate levels are very low, the respiration process may stop and the plant cells begin to die. Respiration may also stop due to a lack of oxygen. Root cells growing in waterlogged, compacted or heavy clay soil may lack sufficient oxygen for survival. Certain areas of the plant have priority for the use of carbohydrates. If they are limited, due to close-mowing or poor environment, root growth is affected before shoot growth. Carbohydrates left over after immediate respiration and growth needs are stored in the crown, stem and rhizome tissue and used for; recovery from any injury, plant hardiness and survival during dormancy. |
