Abstract/Contents:Discusses the different classifications of insecticides, and how they affect insects as well as people. The insecticides are grouped by their action on the pest; contact, stomach poison, or fumigant. Also, they are grouped by their chemical nature; inorganic compounds, synthetic organic compounds and organic compounds. Tests of pesticides on lab animals are used to determine toxicity to humans. The lethal dose is called "Oral LD50". The lower the LD50 number, the more toxic the pesticide. Despite intensive studies for many years, little is known about how and why insecticides kill insects. The most common types of insecticides are all nerve poisons. The nervous systems of insect pests are sensitive and easily disrupted. Most neurotoxic pesticides cause similar effects in both mammalian and insect nerve tissues. All pesticides in the same chemical group cause the same kind of intoxication. The poisoning may be mild or severe depending on the amount involed. Tables regarding LD50 ratings and pesticide poisoning symptoms are included in this work as well as figures illustrating modes of action.
