Abstract/Contents:Discusses the action of preemergence and postemergence herbicides. A list of herbicides indicating their nomenclature, herbicide activity and behavior in soils is included. Herbicides are grouped as soil-applied herbicides and foilage-applied herbicides. Soil-applied herbicides can be absorbed by roots, underground shoots or seeds. Roots absorb the herbicides the same way as nutrients. When the site of herbicide action is located othar than in the roots, the herbicide must be translocated to these sites. Soil-applied herbicides may be either adsorbed or absorbed by seeds present in the soil. When an adsorbed herbicide remains on the outer surface of the seed coat it may be absorbed by the seedling as it emerges. Underground shoot absorption is also important in grass and broadleaf plants. Two important features of foiliar-applied herbicides are foliar retention and herbicide penetration. Contact herbicides have little or no translocation because they kill living cells upon contact. Systemic herbicides depend on translocation. They are translocated from their sites of entry to their sites of phytotoxicity within the plant, thus they are slower acting. Other factors that may affect herbicide activity are; light, temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind and treatment dates.
