Abstract/Contents:"Precision turfgrass management has focused on determining how spectral reflectance is correlated to important turfgrass parameters (i.e. visual quality, nitrogen status, drought stress, and chlorophyll and tissue nitrogen contents). While most studies use normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), we propose using a different vegetation index, normalized difference red edge (NDRE), to measure creeping bentgrass turfgrass nitrogen status. The NDRE vegetation index does not saturate with 100% canopy cover, unlike NDVI, and is closely related to chlorophyll content. Reflectance was measured three times a week on a nine-hole par three course in eastern Nebraska using a proximal active sensor attached to a fairway mower to monitor plant nitrogen status for prescription fertilizer applications and detect variability of the fairways. The fairways were split into three groups even groups to fertilize at a constant rate throughout each fairway or variable rate applications based on NDVI or NDRE. The efficacy of fertilizer applications and variability of fairways will be quantified to determine the application of precision turfgrass management on fairways for fertility management."
