Abstract/Contents:"Annual bluegrass (ABG, Poa annua L.) is considered as an undesirable species in turfgrass systems in Pennsylvania. To effectively manage ABG, it is important to be able to accurately predict ABG seedling emergence. Four 50 cm × 50 cm plots were established on ABG maintained as both putting green and fairway at the Joseph Valentine Turfgrass Research Facility in University Park, PA and just fairway at the Country Club Harrisburg in Harrisburg, PA. Initial plots were established in Sep. 2019 and additional four plots were set at each location in Apr. 2020. Grass within each plot was killed by glyphosate (2304 g a.i. /ha) prior to counting seedling emergence. Seedling emergence was counted every two weeks and removed after each count to allow for subsequent emergence. Soil temperature and moisture was also documented. Cumulative percentage of seedling emergence was calculated. On Valentine putting green, ABG in 2019 fall plots reached 45% seedling emergence in early Oct. 2019 and achieved another 45% emergence from Apr. to Jul. 2020. On the same putting green, ABG in 2020 spring plots reached 90% seedling emergence in late Jul. 2020. Annual bluegrass in Valentine fairway 2019 fall plots reached 75% of seedling emergence in early Oct., while on the 2020 spring plots, it reached 45% emergence in late Jun. 2020 and had 40% emergence during the fall 2020. In Harrisburg fairway 2019 fall plots, ABG seedling emergence cumulated to 40% with a constant rate until Dec. 2019 and increased rapidly to 95 % from Apr. to Jun. 2020. In Harrisburg fairway 2020 spring plots, ABG seedling emergence reached to 60% in early Jun. and had 25% of increase from Sep. to Oct. 2020. Generally, more than 80% seedling emergence occurred during spring and fall when soil temperature range between 10°C to 20°C."
