Abstract/Contents:"In general, most of the turfgrass are adapted to slightly acid field. Annual bluegrass [Poa annua L. forma reptans (Hausskn.) T. Koyama] can grow well in a pH range from 6 to 7. Based on the previous study, the conditions that mat layer pH is lower than 5.5 or the deficiencies in extractable Ca can increase anthracnose (Colletotrichum cereale Manns sensu lato Crouch, Clarke, and Hillman) of annual bluegrass. Further study is needed to determine the effect of pH and Ca nutrient to the anthracnose. A continued field trial was conducted at Hort Farm 2 during 2019 and 2020 to determine the response of anthracnose on annual bluegrass to a range of soil pH and Ca levels. Limestone, gypsum and sulfur were applied to adjust soil pH and Ca levels. Five limestone treatments were applied in 2020 and 2021 spring to increase the soil pH. Two sulfur treatments and two gypsum treatments were applied in 2020 and 2021 as the same date as the limestone applications to decrease the soil pH and increase the soil calcium content. Three more additional gypsum applications were applied during the growing season with a 4 to 6-wk interval to maintain the soil calcium level. Anthracnose was rated every week once the disease symptoms were showed up. AUDPC is calculated to evaluate the disease severity. Both limestone and gypsum treatments reduced anthracnose severity. The moderate to high rates of limestone treatments reduced anthracnose severity by 30% to 65% in 2019 and 20% to 50% in 2020 compared to the untreated check treatments. Gypsum treatments reduced anthracnose severity by 30% to 40% in 2019 and 2020 compared to the untreated check treatment. One more year data is needed to confirm our observation across a broader range in pH among the treatments."
