Abstract/Contents:"A closer research-industry partnership is likely to produce greater benefits for the amenity of turf industry in New Zealand from improved government funding of turf research. The government has provided a challenge to New Zealand industries to become more involved with research and development. Compared with other countries, New Zealand's investment in research is low, particularly industry investment which is only one third of the average for OECD countries. The government has recently indicated that its priorities for its own investment in research, through the Public Good Science Fund, are for programmes is those sectors in which a strong research-industry partnership is planned and developed, and where industry supports research with its own funds. Turf research funding from the government in the current year is $250,000, less than half of that provided by the private sector. This ratio is very favourable compared to other industry sectors. The industries associated with the development, production and use of turf surfaces in New Zealand are, therefore, well positioned to attract a larger and fairer share of government research funds provided the industry itself continues positively in its funding of research and development. The immediate challenge for the sports turf industry is to join with the wider amenity turf industry, including research organisations, to develop a vision for the future of the industry, a research strategy for achieving this vision, and to make the case to government's research funding agency."
