Abstract/Contents:"Horticultural interest production of plastic grown sod (PGS) dates back to the 1960s. Since that time, demand for thick-cut plastic grown sod for midseason repair or complete renovation of professional and collegiate sports field venues has increased dramatically. However, published information on best practices for establishing plastic grown sod (PGS) is lacking. Furthermore, there has been very little prior research done to examine cultural factors relating to rate of establishment and final quality of plastic grown sod. Therefore, repeat greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate the influence of cultural factors including mowing frequency, topdressing particle size, and plant growth regulator on rate of establishment, tensile strength, and root/rhizome development in plastic-grown "Latitude 36" hybrid bermudagrass. The results of the study show that plastic grown sod possesses extremely high root length density. Also, cultural treatments resulted in few differences with regard to final sod tensile strength."
