| Abstract/Contents: | According to the disposition of the leaf sclerenchyma (1) in a ring-like structure, (2) in three bundles or (3) in an intermediate arrangement, the species fall into three groups. Group (1) includes F. vaginata and F. glauca; group (2) the polyploid series F. pseudovina, F. valesiaca and F. sulcata; and group (3) F. wagneri. F1 hybrids produced between diploid F. glauca and F. vaginata varied greatly in male and female sterility (the two being uncorrelated) and in pollen-grain size, as well as in other characters. Suggestions regarding the phylogenetic relationships of the species in the various groups are made. |
