Abstract/Contents:"A selection of 15 varieties of Lolium perenne and Lolium hybridum, mainly early-heading types of New Zealand origin, were grown under 10 weeks vernalization and four photoperiods: 14, 16, 18 and 20 h, to determine the regime best suited for discriminating between varieties on the basis of heading date. The 10-week vernalization/14-h photoperiod regime was under-inductive with only five of the nine varieties in the test reaching 100% heading. With a 16-h photoperiod the cumulative heading curves and 50% heading data provided enough information to separate 14 of the 15 varieties evaluated; only Nui and Pacific could not be separated. The 18-h photoperiod regime was slightly over-inductive with 11 of the 15 varieties having a range in mean heading date of only 6 days. The 20-h photoperiod regime was also over-inductive, 9 of the 10 varieties having a range of only 8 days. However, the late-heading variety Vigor was not fully induced to head under this photoperiod suggesting the need for further research to discriminate between later heading varieties using this technique. Ruanui was included in all tests and the data were highly repeatable. Heading order of some varieties was strongly affected by photoperiod. Discrimination among the varieties evaluated could be achieved in less than six months."
