Abstract/Contents:"Prolific seed production of annual bluegrass allows for rapid development of herbicide resistance. Ethofumesate resistant annual bluegrass plants have been known to exist in grass seed production in Oregon but their prevalence and distribution is not well documented. Therefore, a dose-response experiment was initiated to determine the potential level of ethofumesate resistance in Poa annua L. in seed production systems. Seed from 55 annual bluegrass populations was obtained from three sources: seed production fields (31 populations), seed cleaning process (6 populations), and seed testing prior to retail distribution (18 populations). Additionally, two populations, one with known resistance and one with known susceptibility, were identified in preliminary testing and used as controls in this experiment. Individual seedlings from each population were transplanted into separate cone-tainers, grown to a size of 23 tillers in the greenhouse, and then sprayed with ethofumesate. Ten doses of ethofumesate were applied using a compressed air track spray chamber: 0, 0.6, 1.1, 2.8, 5.6, 8.4, 11.2, 16.8, 22.4, and 44.8 (with 1.1 to 2.2 kg ai ha-1 as the label application rates for perennial ryegrass). Biomass of plants was collected 28 days after application. The resistance to susceptible ratio of populations across all sources was ranging from 0.5 to 5.5, with the most resistant population with an effective dose to kill 50% of the plants (ED50) at 13.1 kg ai ha -1. The highest level of resistance from annual bluegrass populations found in production fields, removed during the seed cleaning process, or found in seed testing lots had ED50 values of 12.1, 13.1, and 9.4 kg ai ha -1. These results indicate that annual bluegrass resistance is found in seed production fields and some seed lots. Strategies for managing herbicide resistance should be implemented by growers."
