Abstract/Contents:"This paper outlines the current understanding of factors affecting racetrack performance. The interaction of the athlete (the horse) and turf is significantly different from that of other coarse turf surfaces. Based on research results, a track can be objectively on both its potential winter performance through measured soil aeration, and actual performance through winter pore saturation and penetrometer readings. Using indices of track performance, information can be provided to track managers on the effectiveness of their soil management programmes. This information can give turf managers the confidence to use radical soil physical treatments needed to make the required improvement in their racing surface."
