Abstract/Contents:Water is involved in every plant function as a constituent, a reagent, a solvent, and as a means of maintaining turgor. Plants have a known requirement for water, depending of course on such variables as; turfgrass variety, climatic conditions, cultural practices, and end use of the turf area. So the primary constituent recommended for any good water management program is the applying of water "soundly" to the surface and providing good drainage. What is needed is a full consideration of the behavior of water in the root zone area. The object is to change the physical properties of water so that the surface-applied irrigation or rainfall will; wet rapidly, move uniformly throughout the root zone, uniformly moisten all the root zone, drain rapidly any excess moisture, and increase the availability of the moisture remaining in the root zone. This can all be accomplished by the use of an effective wetting agent program. Includes a series of the slides and discussion of how the high tensile and surface tension of water can cause turf related problems such as; localized dry spot, puddling, compaction, diseases, wilt, and shallow rooting.
