Abstract/Contents: | As an alternative to the implementation of chemicals to cobat the damages caused by the larvae of the garden chafer (Gartenlaubkäfer), the june bug and tipula, scientists are breeding a specific nematode, a worm of 1mm in length that will feed only on the larvae of the target pest. The nematodes are sprayed on the surface, and quickly bore their way into the sub layers, seeking their food source, the larvae. The nematodes are proving to be incredibly effective, eradicating up to 90% of the target larvae. Once having killed off their food source, the nematodes die as well, effectively removing them from the environment. |
