Abstract/Contents:"Golf course superintendents' views on rolling putting greens have changed over the years. Many years ago, when mowing capabilities were limited, superintendents used rollers extensively to improve the surface uniformity of golf greens. As mowing technology improved, most superintendents limited the rolling of greens due to concerns about possible detrimental effects from wear and compaction. In the 1990's, the development of new lightweight rollers has many superintendents reconsidering the value of rolling golf greens." Discusses the results of research that was conducted to assess how rolling affected soil compaction, green speed, and turf quality. A table is given showing the potential advantages and disadvantages of rolling putting greens.
