| Abstract/Contents: | "... two schools of thought have developed." The "basic cation saturation ratio (BCSR)" and the "sufficiency levels of available nutrients (SLAN)". "Since each concept or school of thought has its own distinct advantages and shortcomings, the current trend is to blend the two concepts together. This approach has recently been taken one step further by the addition of plant tissue testing. The ultimate measure of the availability of plant nutrients is to determine their concentrations in the foliage. This is a fairly recent development for the turfgrass industry and data are limited, however the present data allow a fairly clear interpretation of acceptable and deficient ranges for most grass species... the most complete assessment of the fertility status of turf can be obtained through a combination of soil sample analysis and evaluation using both the BCSR and SLAN concepts followed by a plant tissue analysis to confirm the soil tests." Topics include: how and where to collect samples (soil samples, tissue samples, and selection of analysis), interpretation of results (extraction methods), and acceptable nutrient levels (soils, tissues, data management, and high pH levels). |
