Abstract/Contents:Describes management practices to follow when establishing new turfgrass from seed on an athletic field. Early frequent irrigation (8-10 times/day) will keep the surface soil moist during the first 10 to 14 days following seeding for proper germination. After emergence, .15 to .25 inches of water may be required daily (in 2 or 3 applications) to keep the root zone moist for proper development. Early nitrogen fertilization should be in the slow release form at no more than 1/3 lb N/1000 ft2 every 10 to 14 days. Mowing should commence when new seedlings reach 1 3/4 inch if height of cut will be 1 1/2 inches. This timely care should help a healthy turf to become established in about 1 year or slightly less time.
