| Abstract/Contents: | The progeny from crosses between three European varieties and a number of Tunisian ecotypes tended to be intermediate between the parents in morphology, days to flowering, length of flowering period and percentage of plants flowering in the year of sowing. The hybrids were generally more vigorous than the parents in both spaced and turf conditions. They had good resistance to Puccinia species and had acceptable cold resistance. They were also sterile. Chromosome doubling restored fertility and resulted in decreased vigour; cold resistance in doubled material was similar to that of the undoubled hybrids. Selfing the doubled hybrids produced homogeneous families which behaved like pure lines. The best polycrosses of these lines had dry-matter yields up to 27% better than the best European variety. |
