Abstract/Contents:After ploughing and sowing natural grassland on highly decomposed peat in the Notec river valley, there was considerable regrowth not only of rhizomatous grasses such as Poa pratensis but also of tufted grasses including Deschampsia caespitosa, Holcus lanatus, Dactylis glomerata, Festuca arundinacea, F. pratensis, Phleum pratense, Avenastrum pubescens and Anthoxanthum odoratum. Studies revealed that the regrowth of these grasses was from underground stems morphologically and anatomically resembling rhizomes. Below ground the sclerenchyma cells were located towards the centre of these stems, whereas above ground the sclerenchyma was located nearer the periphery and the anatomical structure was characteristic of a grass stem.
