| Abstract/Contents: | "Yard trimmings are the largest single component of the residential waste stream in San Jose, California. Curbside collection and a switch to volume based fees have led to successful diversion, but the composting infrastructure is only now catching up to the tonnage." Discusses permits and equipment used, high tonnages and rainy weather, arranging for backup, current management picture and lessons learned by the Guadalupe Rubbish Disposal Company and the City of San Jose. The sidebar discusses information on the residents of Almaden Valley that surround the composting facility complaints of safety issues involving Aspergillus fumigatus, a disease caused by spores. |
