| Abstract/Contents: | "The initial selection period for material in a creeping bentgrass breeding program has traditionally taken up to two growing seasons. The objective of this research was to investigate the feasibility of seedling selection for tiller morphology. Seedlings of 15 cultivars or lines were grown in a controlled environment and mature turf in two field plot experiments on a modified medium. Tiller counts were made at 21 d, 28 d and 35 d in the controlled environment at year 1 and year 3 in the two field studies. Seedling tiller number demonstrated good correlation with turf tiller density, ranging from r=0.56 to r=0.88. The correlation between the two field turf studies was r=0.93. In conclusion, these results suggest that selection for tiller number and stolon internode length in a controlled environment is an effective selection method for the expression of these traits in an actual turf environment." |
